Reading Workshop/Daily 5
The Daily Five is a way of structuring the reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These research-based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student’s reading achievement throughout the year and will help foster a love of reading in your child. Through this process students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students.
Students are engaged in the Daily Five each day, which are comprised of:
« Read to Self (students spend time independently reading)
« Read to Someone (students engage in partner reading)
« Listen to Reading (students listen to books on cd or books on the computer)
« Word Work (students manipulate and build words using a variety of tools)
« Work on Writing (students explore writing using a variety of templates)
Along with learning the specific behavior expectations that go with each Daily Five component, we are also working on building our reading and writing stamina and fostering our classroom community. This gives me greater opportunities to learn about your child’s strengths and greatest needs as a reader in order to best plan for each student’s instruction.
Between rotations, the class will be emerged in whole group mini-lessons. These mini-lessons will be focused around the units of study such as high-frequency words, interactive read alouds, phonics, and comprehension strategy instruction. These lessons will guide the students to become better readers and assist them while working with small groups and independently.
